Aguilera’s the Answer
Date: July 1986
Rick Aguilera was one of several young pitchers who hit their stride in 1986. This was his road jersey during the season. Though later primarily known as a closer, the 24-year-old Aguilera was the Mets fifth starter for most of the 1986 season, winning 10 games with a 3.88 ERA. After some time in the bullpen in June, Aguilera returned to the rotation in mid-July, winning five straight starts, including two complete game victories. “I’ve been waiting for this for a long time,” said Aguilera. “It couldn’t come at a better time, and now I’m ready to make a contribution in the second half.” Aguilera allowed just six earned runs over those five starts while striking out 30 and walking only four batters.
