A Banner Day Like No Other
Date: October 25, 1986
Taking Ron Darling’s challenge that “real Mets fans” needed to show up for the World Series, actor and musician Michael Sergio hatched a plan to parachute into Shea Stadium before Game 6 of the World Series. Clutching a bedsheet painted with the words “GO METS” Sergio wanted to land on home plate just after the national anthem, but a headwind delayed their approach and he landed during the top of the 1st inning. ” I realized the noise [from the fans] was for me. … The fans were on their feet screaming — all those smiling faces,” said Sergio later in an interview. The writer of that story noted that “as the police escorted Sergio off the field, Ron Darling slapped him a high five.”
