The Ticker Tale of the Tape
Date: October 28, 1986
An estimated 2.5 million Mets fans turned out for a ticker-tape parade that rolled from Battery Place to City Hall Plaza to celebrate the 1986 World Series. Dignitaries like Mayor Ed Koch and Governor Mario Cuomo joined manager Davey Johnson in an open car. According to police estimates, it was the largest ticker-tape parade in the city’s history in terms of attendees. “They gave us some of the most exciting sports this town has ever seen,” said Koch. The Mets were just as overjoyed. World Series MVP Ray Knight said, “The whole last three days have been unbelievable. I’ve got goosebumps.” Second baseman Wally Backman added, “This means everything. This is what life is all about in New York City.”
