Though the Mets dropped their first game in St. Louis, it did not dampen the enthusiasm for the return of National League baseball to New York. The Mets were greeted with a ticker-tape parade through Manhattan before the home opener. The team tossed these foam balls into the crowd as a souvenir of the birth of the team.
