The Architects

Manager Davey Johnson and GM Frank Cashen, the partners who built the 1986 Mets and made them into World Series champions, celebrated after the series. Johnson, who once opposed the Mets as a member of the 1969 Baltimore Orioles, was promoted to the big league skipper’s job in 1984 by Cashen after two seasons as a minor league manager. In each of his six full seasons, the Mets posted winning records and claimed two NL East Championships. Cashen, who also came from the Orioles, took over as Mets GM in 1980. Cashen drafted Darryl Strawberry and Dwight Gooden and traded for Keith Hernandez and Gary Carter in headline deals. Cashen also subtly added key contributors like Bobby Ojeda, Ron Darling, Sid Fernandez, Ray Knight and Howard Johnson.
