Now Playing Right Field – Roger McDowell!
Roger McDowell, seen here being congratulated by Keith Hernandez after a road win, led the Mets with 75 appearances and 22 saves while also winning 14 games in his second big league season. His most interesting game might have been on a random Tuesday night in Cincinnati. After the Mets tied the game in the 9th inning off Reds closer John Franco there was a bench-clearing brawl in the Reds half of the 10th inning which left the Mets with only seven position players. McDowell came in to pitch for Jesse Orosco who didn’t leave the game but instead went to right field! Over the next three innings McDowell and Orosco shifted between the mound and the outfield based on matchups. In the 14th inning Howard Johnson hit a three-run home run – with Orosco on base – and McDowell retired the Reds in the bottom half to earn the most bizarre win of the season, 6-3.
