First of Many
Date: April 13, 1962
More than 1,600 days passed between September 29, 1957, when the New York Giants hosted the Pittsburgh Pirates at the Polo Grounds, and April 13, 1962, when the Mets hosted the Pirates on the same field. In the new team’s home opener, former Pirate Frank Thomas’s eighth-inning single brought the Mets to within one, but they ultimately fell, 4-3. More than 12,000 New Yorkers braved the cool and drizzly conditions.
