The Metropolitan Baseball Club
Date: February 14, 1962
Do you know the original name of the Mets? Prior to the team’s first season, Director of Public Relations Tom Meany wrote a letter about the Mets nickname, explaining that the team’s corporate name was “Metropolitan Baseball Club, Inc.” The name was a partial homage to the New York Metropolitans, a 19th century team in the American Association who played at an earlier version of the Polo Grounds. Meany acknowledged that the shortened “Mets” moniker seemed popular; as the regular season got underway, it became ubiquitous.
