A Picture is Worth a Thousand Words
One of the most iconic moments in baseball history, Mookie Wilson’s ground ball in Game 6 of the 1986 World Series, as called by Bob Murphy: “A slow ground ball went right through the legs of Buckner down the right field line. The Mets have won the ballgame. Three runs in the bottom half of the 10th inning. Three runs in the 10th inning. They were down to their final strike twice in the bottom half of the 10th inning, they win the ballgame. I thought the ground ball was going to be foul, it stayed fair. It went right through the legs of Billy Buckner and down the right field line.” The game lasted so long that NBC decided to pre-empt that night’s edition of Saturday Night Live for the first time. When the taped episode aired two weeks later, Ron Darling appeared in the opening to apologize.
