Pete Alonso Becomes The Polar Bear

In spring training before Pete Alonso’s rookie season, veteran third baseman Todd Frazier took one look at the 24-year-old and said, “You look like a big polar bear!” Frazier, a former Home Run Derby champion himself, knew power when he saw it and the name stuck. Pitcher Noah Syndergaard made the “Pete the Polar Bear” name public after the team’s first series against the Washington Nationals in which Alonso wore this jersey.
