The original Mets would never have achieved their level of adoration without their beloved skipper, Casey Stengel. One of Stengel’s most famous quips of the 1962 season was after drafting catcher Hobie Landreth first in the expansion draft. Stengel reportedly explained the pick saying, “When ya build a ball club, ya gotta start with a catcher, ’cause if you don’t you’ll have all pass balls.” True, Casey. Very true.
