Casey’s Threads
Hall of Fame manager Casey Stengel wore this jersey in the Mets first game, a cool and wet night in St. Louis as New York fell to Cardinals, 11-4. It was a short road trip as the Mets only played one game in St. Louis before returning to New York to kick off their home schedule at the Polo Grounds against Pittsburgh two nights later. By putting on this jersey that night, “The Old Perfessor” became the first and only person to wear the uniform of all four modern New York City-based Major League Baseball teams as a player or manager. Stengel played for the Brooklyn Dodgers (1912-1917) and the New York Giants (1921-1923) and managed the Dodgers (1934-1936), the New York Yankees (1949-1960) and the New York Mets (1962-1965).
