The Mets and Braves Hug It Out
Date: September 21, 2001
The heated rivalry between the Mets and Atlanta Braves came to a momentary halt during pre-game ceremonies. In an extension of the pervasive unity across the country after 9/11, the Mets and Braves greeted each other with friendly hugs after the national anthem. When asked about the opening ceremony, legendary Braves skipper Bobby Cox said, “[The Mets] weren’t the enemy after all, for about 10 minutes.”
