Franco’s Most Important Outing
Date: September 21, 2001
Mets players, led by team captain and Brooklyn native John Franco, quickly came to the aid of the relief workers clearing the rubble at the World Trade Center. Shea Stadium turned into an impromptu staging ground for relief supplies, which Franco and his teammates helped to distribute. “We as a team, as an organization, were committed to help,” said Franco. “There wasn’t a guy who wanted to run home. We unloaded trailers, boxed up work boots, water bottles, batteries. If we could have stayed all night, we would have.”
