Cy Sid?

The Mets rotation in 1986 featured superstar Dwight “Doc” Gooden, trusted veteran Bob Ojeda, 1985 All-Star Ron Darling and Sid Fernandez. The 23-year-old Fernandez became the first born-and-raised Hawaiian to be named to an MLB All-Star team as he posted 16 wins with a 3.52 ERA and matched Gooden with 200 strikeouts and did so in 45 fewer innings than Doc. The highlight for “El Sid” came on July 11 when in front of nearly 40,000 fans on a Friday night at Shea Stadium he tossed a two-hit shutout in an 11-0 win over the Atlanta Braves. Fernandez struck out nine and did not allow a hit after the 3rd inning. To help his own cause, Fernandez had three hits, scored twice and drove in a run. This program was from the next homestand.
