A LONG WAY FROM HOME
Date: May 11–24, 2009
That’s one giant leap for the Mets! As part of a final servicing mission to the Hubble Space Telescope in 2009, Atlantis shuttled a home plate from Shea Stadium right into Outer Space. Mike Massimino – Mets superfan, New York native and oh by the way a NASA astronaut – kept the plate in his locker on the trip. Once back on Earth, Massimino brought the plate to Citi Field and threw out the first pitch before a Mets game in July. NASA presented these items to the Mets in recognition of the feat.
