Who’s up? Before a game, managers decide on the batting order — meaning the order in which batters will face the opposing pitcher. The order doesn’t change and doesn’t reset, except in rare circumstances, so it’s important to get it just right. When deciding the lineup, the manager takes into account his players’ strengths and weaknesses, the handedness of the pitcher, the weather and maybe even some superstitions. Depending on who you talk to, cooking up the lineup is either an art or a science. It’s unsurprising, then, that lineup cards have become sacred mementos for players and fans alike.
