Carlos Beltrán homered among three hits in his first game with the Mets in 2005. What other National Baseball Hall of Famer made his debut that April day in Cincinnati?

New Mets general manager Omar Minaya signed Carlos Beltrán and Pedro Martínez in the offseason and both made their Mets debuts on April 4, 2005 in Cincinnati. Pedro struck out 12 in six strong innings, but the Mets fell late. It was also David Wright’s first Opening Day with the Mets after coming up in mid-2004. Tom Glavine (2003) and Billy Wagner (2006) were Hall of Fame pitchers whose Mets debuts came in other seasons.

True or False: Carlos Beltrán set aside 10 percent of his salary for charitable works by his Foundation.
Correct!

When he signed with the Mets, Carlos Beltrán dedicated 10 percent of his salary for his Foundation. In 2011, he built the Carlos Beltrán Baseball Academy in Puerto Rico which opened just after he was traded to San Francisco. For his career of giving, Carlos Beltrán was given the Roberto Clemente Award in 2013.

Carlos Beltrán’s combination of power and speed led him to be inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame. He was the fourth player in AL/NL history to have 400 home runs, 300 stolen bases, score 1,500 runs and drive in 1,500 runs. One of the other three also played for the Mets. Who was he?

Carlos Beltrán joined Willie Mays, Alex Rodriguez and Barry Bonds as the only players to reach those statistical heights. Of those, Beltrán and Mays are the only ones inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame.
