Three For the Home Crowd
Date: July 12, 2015
In more than 50 years no Mets player had hit three home runs in a single home game. That was until Kirk Nieuwenhuis. The veteran outfielder started the season with the Mets, but was claimed on waivers by the Angels only to return to the Mets on June 13. A month later Nieuwenhuis became the 10th Mets player to hit three home runs in a game and the first at home as New York defeated the visiting Arizona Diamondbacks, 5-3. “It’s been a wild ride, for sure,” said Nieuwenhuis. “Today was a lot of fun.”
