Fans looked forward to Opening Day 1983 as a beloved pitcher was set to start the game. Tom Seaver suited up in a Mets uniform once again, the first time since a mid-season trade in 1977 sent him to the Cincinnati Reds. He recorded 5 strikeouts and allowed just 3 hits in 6 innings of work. The Mets won over the Philadelphia Phillies at home, 2-0. Seaver finished with a 9-14 record and 135 strikeouts in his final season in New York.
