Tom Seaver: First Met Rookie of the Year
Tom Seaver impressed in his debut 1967 season with a 16-13 record, 2.76 ERA and a team-leading 170 strikeouts. That was good enough for NL Rookie of the Year, making Seaver the first Met to win the award and the first NL ROY to win it on a last-place club. In discussing the next season with the press, Seaver said: “I don’t think I should set specific goals. I was thinking the other night about winning 20 games, but I realize you have to win 19 first.” Seaver would reach 20-plus wins as a Met in 1969, 1971, 1972 and 1975.
