The Final Inning
Date: June 1, 2012
Johan Santana was all business as he took the mound in the top of the 9th inning. With his first pitch, St. Louis slugger Matt Holliday lined out to center fielder Andres Torres. The next hitter, Allen Craig, popped a fly ball that LF Kirk Nieuwenhuis easily caught for the second out. 2011 World Series MVP David Freese then stepped to the plate for the Cardinals. Santana fell behind three balls and no strikes, but the lefty battled back to run the count full. On the 3-2 pitch, Freese swung though a signature Santana changeup for the 27th and final out.
