Tom Seaver: The Face of the Mets
Date: 1970s
Tom Seaver’s dominance as “The Franchise” continued into the 1970s, when he won three league ERA titles and two more Cy Young Awards. But his career in New York came to a halt in June 1977 after a trade sent him to the Cincinnati Reds. Shortly after the news, Seaver tearfully answered press questions. “It’s happy and sad. It’s sad because you leave memories. It’s leaving people that you work with and love when you leave a Jerry Koosman, a Bud Harrelson, a Jerry Grote,” Seaver said. He would return in 1983 for one final season as a Met.
