SEAVER STEPS INTO A PITCH
Date: Undated
Tom Seaver extended his terrific 1973 regular season into October. The year’s eventual NL Cy Young Award winner punched out 13 batters in Game 1 of the NLCS, setting a franchise record for most Ks in a postseason game. Despite Seaver’s efforts, the Mets offense came up short and the Mets lost to the Cincinnati Reds, 2-1. Jack Billingham, the Reds starting pitcher, said Seaver “is the greatest pitcher I’ve ever seen.”
