OTD Appreciation from Leiter
Al Leiter was the heart of the Mets pitching staff during the late 1990s and early 2000s. He posted a 95-67 record and 3.42 ERA over seven seasons in New York, leading the club in regular-season wins in five of those campaigns. He was also a member of the 2000 All-Star team and pitched in that year’s World Series. During his Mets career, Leiter said he enjoyed meeting former players such as Ed Charles, Buddy Harrelson, Art Shamsky, Ron Swoboda and Tom Seaver. He looked forward to the 2022 Old Timers Day for that reason. “I always thought there’s some other franchises that have the history to be able to celebrate their past,” Leiter said. “You don’t have to have 20-something World Series. You have people who loved that generation.”
