Keith Hernandez was named the franchise’s first captain in 1987. He proved his worth that season by leading the team in hits and plate appearances while also earning a Gold Glove and an All-Star nod. In 1988, Gary Carter was named co-captain with Hernandez, and they shared duties until Hernandez signed as a free agent with Cleveland after the 1989 season.
