America Is the Home Team
Date: 2001
The first MLB game in New York City following the September 11 attacks was held on September 21 at Shea Stadium. After ten of the worst days in American history, the Mets took the field against the Atlanta Braves and – for one special and unexpected night — everyone was a Mets fan. When Mike Piazza hit the comeback home run in the eighth inning, our spirits soared with the baseball over the left-center outfield fence. The Mets were America’s “home team” that night, and it’s fitting that the team gave the country its own jersey.
