METS HALL OF FAME PLAQUE OF ’69 WS SKIPPER
Date: 1982
Gil Hodges was selected in the expansion draft to join the first Mets team in 1962 and, owing to his time with the Brooklyn Dodgers, was a recognizable face on a brand-new team. After retiring, Hodges returned to the club in 1968 as manager. He became a respected leader who instilled discipline and confidence the young team, and led the Miracle Mets to a World Series championship in 1969. Dodgers great Pee Wee Reese later said of him, “If you had a son, it would be a great thing to have him grow up to be just like Gil Hodges.”
