LEADERS OF THE LEAGUE
Date: 1969
Based on their first eight seasons of play, it seemed like the Mets would never reach the top of the league. They were 60 ½ games out of first place in 1962, and still finishing second-to-last in 1968. But their fate changed the following season. The Mets rattled off a winning streak in late May 1969 and never looked back in pursuit of the NL East division title. They ultimately claimed the pennant after a three-game NLCS sweep of the Atlanta Braves.
