Getting the Win for Seaver
Date: 1982 to 1987
Reliever Doug Sisk was a regular in the Mets bullpen during the 1980s. On Opening Day 1983, he took over in the 7th inning for Tom Seaver, who was making his long-awaited return to New York. Sisk kept Seaver’s scoreless bid going, struck out three batters and allowed no runs in the final three innings to close out a 2-0 victory. It was also Sisk’s first career win. “I said, ‘Oh boy, no way we’re gonna take the loss.’ I want to see the Mets win as much as anybody,” Sisk said. “It was a big game for [Seaver], and it was a big game for the Mets.” Sisk compiled a 3.10 ERA in 263 games over six seasons in New York.
