Elster: Trial and No Errors
Date: 1986 to 1992
Kevin Elster was a reliable shortstop for the Mets in the late 1980s. In fact, he was so reliable that he once went 88 consecutive games without an error, a then-MLB record for a shortstop. The streak stretched from July 19, 1988, to May 9, 1989, when Elster mishandled a two-hopper ground ball to end it. “I couldn’t escape the attention no matter how hard I tried,” Elster said. “Right after it happened I was depressed for a while, but now I’m relieved it’s off my chest.” Elster remained the team’s regular shortstop until 1991.
