Just weeks before spring training was to open, the Mets unexpectedly lost franchise icon Tom Seaver to the Chicago White Sox in a compensation draft. With an opening in the rotation, new manager Davey Johnson turned to 19-year-old Dwight Gooden, who starred for Johnson at AAA in 1983.
