Backman’s Heavy Batting
Date: 1980 to 1988
After splitting time between the minor leagues and the Mets for several seasons, Wally Backman took on a more permanent role in 1984. The platoon second baseman was known for his solid hitting near the top of the lineup. During the championship campaign of 1986, Backman had a team-best .320 batting average in the regular season and hit .333 in the World Series. After his playing career, Backman was a Mets minor league manager from 2010 to 2016.
