A Knight’s Tale
Veteran third baseman Ray Knight had a resurgent season in 1986 which carried over into the playoffs. In the 16-inning NLCS clincher, Knight drove in two crucial runs, but it was in the World Series that he shined. The World Series MVP had a hit in six of the seven games and drove in five runs. Knight’s throwing error in Game 6 nearly ended the Mets season but he and the team rallied as he drove in two runs and scored two more including the game-winning run in the 10th inning. At Shea in Game 7, Knight had three hits including a home run which put the Mets ahead and for which he received this curtain call. “I was so down the other night because of the error,” Knight said after Game 7. “Just goes to show you, if you keep fighting, anything can happen. I don’t hit too many home runs but I knew that one was gone.”
