A Combined No-Hitter!
It took 50 years for the Mets to have their first no-hitter, but it took another decade after Johan Santana’s gem for New York to have its second. This time it would not be a herculean effort by a single person but a combined no-hitter that needed five pitchers and more pitches (159) than any MLB no-no since at least 1987. Tylor Megill – who wore these pants – tossed five no-hit innings before giving way to Drew Smith, Seth Lugo, Joely Rodriguez and Edwin Diaz who closed out the 5-0 win over the Philadelphia Phillies at home. After the game Diaz flashed two fingers to the crowd to signify the second no-no. “It’s something that [will] be in history forever,” said James McCann, who caught all nine innings. “Whether it’s one pitcher or five pitchers, it’s a no-hitter. It’s just special.”
