You Could Always Count on Keith Hernandez
Date: September 15, 1987
Keith Hernandez dug into the box for his final at-bat of the game against the Chicago Cubs on September 15, 1987. Facing a full count, Hernandez connected on a strike, sending a hard-hit bouncer to the left side of the infield. Cubs shortstop Shawon Dunston made a diving grab to field it, but Hernandez reached on an infield single to record his 2,000th career hit. Safe at first base, Hernandez tipped his helmet as the Mets faithful and Shea Stadium scoreboard gave the captain an extended standing ovation.
