The Moment He Knew It Was Gone
Date: September 21, 2001
On an 0-1 count in the bottom of the 8th, Atlanta Braves pitcher Steve Karsay grooved a fastball over the plate to slugger Mike Piazza. As soon as the Hall of Fame catcher made contact, the crowd jumped to its feet with great anticipation. As the ball neared the center field wall, Piazza dropped his bat, knowing he had just nailed a home run. Shea Stadium exploded with excitement as Piazza rounded the bases to give the Mets a 3-2 lead. Mets pitcher Armando Benitez would keep the Braves at bay in the 9th to secure the 3-2 victory.
