Sticking up for the Mets
Date: 1980s
One of the most pivotal games in the middle of the 1986 season unfolded at Shea Stadium just before the All-Star Game. In the bottom of the 1st inning, Gary Carter clubbed a three-run home run to put the Mets ahead of the Atlanta Braves. The next pitch from Braves pitcher David Palmer hit Darryl Strawberry, which caused the Mets slugger to charge the mound. “I didn’t know what to do when Strawberry came out,” said Palmer. “I threw the glove [at Strawberry] instinctively. I knew he wasn’t coming out to shake hands.”
