Shea to the Rescue
Date: September 2001
In the immediate aftermath of the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center, the Mets organization transformed Shea Stadium into a staging ground for 9/11 relief efforts. Ownership, management, players and staff all contributed to the procurement and distribution of supplies to support the relief efforts at Ground Zero. As Mets pitcher and New York City-native John Franco recalled, “There wasn’t a guy who wanted to run home. We unloaded trailers, boxed up work boots, water bottles, batteries. If we could have stayed all night, we would have.”
