Mets Win Tom Seaver in Lottery
Date: ca. 1967-1968
Tom Seaver shook hands with William Eckert, the commissioner of MLB from 1965 to 1968. The two had been well-acquainted before Seaver ever landed in New York. The Atlanta Braves originally signed him in 1966 when he was a college player at USC. But MLB rules prevented teams from signing prospects during college seasons, and so Eckert voided the Braves contract. As a result, the Mets won out in a three-team lottery for Seaver and the rest is “Franchise” history.
