Mel Stottlemyre was the Mets pitching coach from 1984 to 1993, which included the 1986 championship team. Said Stottlemyre of his pitching staff after Game 4 of the World Series: “Whenever the team has been down, whose ever turn it’s been has come through. There is no stopper on this team. At one time or another, they’ve all been stoppers.” In addition to 10 seasons with the Mets, Stottlemyre was a longtime New York Yankees pitcher and coach.
