MLB Black Lives Matter T-Shirt
The 2020 season began amidst national protests against racial injustice sparked by the deaths of Black Americans George Floyd and Breonna Taylor by police officers. In response, MLB changed its rules to allow players to wear shirts like this one during batting practice. The Mets and Miami Marlins went a step further on August 27 following the death of Jacob Blake. Less than a minute after the scheduled first pitch at Citi Field, both teams exited their dugouts and held a 42-second moment of silence, a nod to Jackie Robinson. The teams then placed a Black Lives Matter shirt on home plate and left the field. Mets outfielder Michael Conforto said of the actions, “All the players who stand up against racial injustice, we stand behind them. And that’s what you saw tonight.”
