John Franco Pitches for His Hometown
Date: September 21, 2001
It was fitting that New York City-native John Franco manned the bump on this night. After the terrorist attacks, Franco poured out emotional support for New York City, first responders and the Mets organization. Franco, who lost two firefighter friends when the towers crumbled, sported a FDNY hat when he came out to pitch in the 8th inning. Remembering that night, Franco said, “The whole city came together as one and we as a city became one big family to help each other out and I was very, very proud to say that I’m a New Yorker.”
