FROM CHUMPS TO CHAMPS
Date: 1969
After finishing one game out of last place in 1968, not many expected the Mets to win the World Series in the following season. Manager Gil Hodges righted the ship, a platoon system was in place and the pitching staff led the way to one of the most incredible turnarounds in MLB history. “No more worlds to conquer. No more miracles to perform. No more disbelievers to convince…The eight-year-old, one-time ragamuffin, perennial doormat, not-to-be-believed Mets are baseball champions of all the world,” wrote New York Daily News reporter Phil Pepe.
