MLB experienced a major shakeup prior to the 1969 season, when both leagues split into regional divisions. The Mets chased the Chicago Cubs all year for the title of the new six-team NL East Division. Behind by 10 games on August 13, the Mets rallied and won 34 of the next 44 outings to officially clinch the title on September 24. It was the team’s first division win and guaranteed the first postseason trip in franchise history.
