A Formal Invitation: Opening Game at Shea
Date: April 17, 1964
The first season at Shea Stadium brought MLB to another borough in New York City. While the Yankees played in the Bronx, the Dodgers in Brooklyn and the Giants in Manhattan, the new Mets stadium was constructed on Roosevelt Avenue in Flushing. The 1964 event garnered much fanfare, including invitations from Commissioner of Parks Newbold Morris, for the opening game against the Pittsburgh Pirates.
